Ways of working

There are different ways to work

Work doesn’t just mean having a paid 9 to 5 job. Work doesn’t have to be full-time, paid or permanent and you don’t even have to work for someone else.

Your job could be:

  • full-time or part-time
  • permanent or temporary
  • 9 to 5 or shift work
  • paid or voluntary
  • employed or self-employed
  • homeworking, working in an office/organisation, or a combination of both,

And don’t forget apprenticeships are jobs with training.

Which of these will help you achieve your career goal?

  • A job with training, such as an apprenticeship.
  • Some voluntary work, so you have the work experience needed for a job or training course.
  • A part-time job to fit in with full-time study.
  • Being self-employed. Do you have the business skills and ideas to be an entrepreneur, to run a business?

When you start work remember to:

  • wear something smart until you know what is acceptable
  • be on time
  • ask if you are unsure of anything. If you make a mistake, own up
  • put your mobile to ‘silent’ and don't use it when you should be working
  • don’t use social networks at work. It is advisable not to put comments on social networks about work or anything you would not like your employer to see
  • be friendly and polite.
